Kitty Hawk Surf Co. is proud to offer a huge selection of skate and balance boards from Arbor, Carver, Penny, and Vew-do. Since we get a ton of questions about our boards in the store, we decided to put together a simple guide. Stop in at one of our stores to check out our newest selection.

Surfstyle – These are skateboards that are designed to mimic surfing. You do not push them to generate speed like a regular skateboard, you pump them like you would a surfboard. There aren’t always waves in the Atlantic Ocean so unfortunately you can’t go surfing every day. However, you can still improve your surfing with these skateboards that ride like surfboards.

Longboards – A longboard is simply an oversized skateboard. The wheels are softer and bigger than those found on your typical skateboard, allowing for a much smoother ride. Longboards are also considered to be a very beginner-friendly way for lesser-experienced skateboarders to get the basics of riding down. There are many different longboard shapes, lengths, and widths designed for different riders and riding styles. Once you’re comfortable riding a longboard, you may get into carving, board slides, speed riding and other fun tricks.

Penny Boards – A Penny board is a type of plastic skateboard, which is commonly referred to as a short cruiser. The term “Penny” is synonymous with Penny Skateboards, an Australian-based company that was founded in 2010 by former pro skateboarder Ben Mackay. The folks at Penny Skateboards revived the plastic skateboard category by pairing high-quality plastic desks with cruiser wheels and trucks – making for a smooth ride on a short board. Penny Skateboards are often very colorful and quite durable. Great choice for kids and adults alike.

Balance Boards – Balance boards involve the use of a flat, hard top and a rounded bottom which requires the user to employ solid balance skills with swift movements in order to stay balanced and standing on top of the balance board. Primarily used in sports training, fitness, exercise, and physical rehabilitation, balance boards can help your skateboarding skills substantially. If you can’t feel comfortable and balanced while riding a skateboard, than you may never progress to doing any sort of tricks. Balance boards are the perfect way to work on your balance and keep your skills up during the offseason.
